Over our Christmas break, our friend Dan rented a house for us on the other side of the island. We had such a great time getting to know our fellow staff members that we will be working with over the next few months, and it was a great time to relax before the mayhem starts when all the students arrive. The other side of the island seems like a different country than the side that we live on. It is much nearer to the volcano, and has lush jungle and lots of rain. We had a great couple of days exploring the sites, which included a black sand beach, huge lava fields, where we actually saw hot lava being cooled by the ocean, warm ocean pools, heated by steam vents from the volcano, and taking a drive down a little dirt road through the jungle. I was blown away by our creator, and the beauty and diversity that he creates....absolutely amazing!! Here are a few pictures.

the closer we got to where the lava was flowing, it looked more and more like a different world

This is all fresh lava being cooled by the ocean...that's why there is lots of steam
